Welcome to Garbage Weekend. It’s the internet garbage you know and love, but in a format that’s easier to read while you try very, very hard to not google anything about the state of the country right now.

No fun way to say it, folks: This week was a milestone in the United States’ transition to a shitpost-based government. A catastrophically illegal and unsecured groupchat is being used to organize bombings on foreign soil. AI-generated ripoffs of anime are being used to promote extrajudicial arrests, while the people who make that AI think it's so based they're breaking into 4chan greentext about it. Because posting is now law, your posts can be grounds to revoke or deny your legal right to live in the country. It’s all new and uncertain, but also straight out of the authoritarian playbook. Just look at Turkey, which is blocking social media access as pro-democracy protests break out after the government arrested political rivals. If there’s a lesson to learn, it’s probably that all totalitarian governments are this embarrassing — and this time, we’re all online enough to be embarrassed ourselves.
